Folks, For some stupid reason I've waited 30 years to acquire the magnificent Monk album Brilliant Corners. The problem with digital over the net is that you don't get all the liner notes, and a little websearching didn't help either. I know that Oscar Pettiford and Paul Chambers are both on this record. Which cuts have OP and which have PC? In the meantime I'll try and guess!
That's a great album! Not sure who plays on which tracks, haven't heard it in years. But what a lovely choice for Monk to have had to make; OP or PC.....
Wasn't Bemsha from a different session? with a trumpet instead of alto. that would make it the odd tune out for a different bass. some research at allmusic.com... http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=MISS70306011126&sql=Atgjb7i58g74r PC is on Bemsha only. one of my favorite albums of all time!
This talk about PC and Monk reminds my of when on any weekend I could walk in and sit 3 feet from Sonny Rollins playing with Monk. Before him, Johnny Griffin. I could nurse 2 or 3 beers and get hours of them. One night, Chambers wandered in from God knows where, he was wearing bedroom slippers, sat in and killed the place. Those days, there were at least a dozen clubs you could go to any night of the week to see name bands. I would see Miles, Mingus, Blakey, Monk, McPartland, Phil Woods, Zoot, Red Mitchell, Getz et al, leading bands week after week after week. Little did I know how it would get to be... I guess I sound old. You're right.
