Over the summer, I had some extra cash, so I took the plunge and added a mid 90s SLM era 810E to my arsenal. I was playing an SVT-CL at the time, and I couldn't get the two to play nice together. I brought the cab home recently to use with a band that I sit in with on occasion, and plugged my GK1001RBII into it. WOW! I don't know what my SVT didn't like about the cab, but the GK absolutely roars through the fridge! I litterally knocked pictures off the wall. I shook some jars off of a shelf clear on the other side of the house, in the basement! The SVT sounded thin and made the cab sound like something was blown or dying. The GK produces way more bottom end, and seems to drive the cab with much more authority. I've got 2 full blown killer rigs now! Oh yeah, the 810E fits perfectly in the back seat of my Ford Focus too!
How does the 400+ sound with the 8x10E? I have a SLM 8x10E and unless Mesa comes out with a new all tube amp head in the future I am going to get 400+'s to supply power. I might end up going with bag end cabs in the future (to get more lows) but that will be a long time off so I try not to gas to much about that in the now. What is the ohm load on your 18? Is there anyway you could run both the 8x10 and the 18 with the 400+, if you can let me know what that sounds like K? I think you have very nice gear, and I like your band ... grats on both and good luck to you in the future! Cheers. P.S. I am exactly one week older than you! Go Aries!!! LOL.
Thanks for the kind words! I love my gear, and it took a long time to get there, but it was worth the wait. I don't think I would appreciate it as much if I didn't spend years playing through crappy combos and underpowered heads. I haven't had the chance to play the 810 with the 400+, but I imagine it would be huge! I'm going to bring the 400+ home from the practice space when I get a shock mount rack for it, I'll put it through it's paces and give a full report. The 18" cab is 8 ohm. When I had the SVT, I would run all 3 cabs at the same time @ 2ohms. a 4x10, an 8x10, and an 18...It was rediculously good. I never ran the 810 and the 18 at the same time, but I'm sure I will someday.
