I love Broken Social Scene. Great Chill mellow vibe. This song is just bass and filter. Interesting use of both, any idea on the filter?

to my ear it sound like they put it on post-record.

My wife loves that band. I think you're right, it was probably added afterward. Or, controlled with an expression pedal. Cool effect, either way. Doesn't sound like any filter I've ever had.

I think you could get something similar with an MXR Auto Q and I KNOW you could get something similar with a Guyatone Ultron.

You might be right that it was added in post, but to do something similar live it almost seems in parts like you'd need expression control of sensitivity. But it does sound like an upright bass (is it?) and if so, you've got a larger range of dynamics to play around with anyway.

    Cool sound.

cool thoughts. yeah i keep debating upright versus hollowbody fretless for that tone.

At times it's almost got an auto wah or S/H type thing going on, or maybe just a filter set to down sweep with an expression pedal to control the sensitivity. My first thought was also the MXR Bass Auto Q. :)

I had an MXR Bass Auto Q, and it never sounded like that. I loved that pedal, especially the "shimmer" after effect, but that sample has way more bounce to it.

I just picked up that album (feel good lost) a little awhile ago, it's great. Never thought of this as a bass because the album flows together so beautifully. Ihave to pay more attention...

  9. My initial reaction was "sounds like a fretless hollowbody" so I'm with you there.

That's kind of what I thought when I read the title! :p I re-read it a couple of times before clicking on it, and figured it must be a filter pedal called the "Prison Provence" by a boutique builder called "Broken Social Scene".

I remember getting into BSS when they were on Noise Factory, but then when they broke off and started something bigger (when Leslie Feist joined the band) it was a whole different ball game.

It's not post-album. It's definitely on my copy of Feel Good Lost.

7/4 Shoreline running through my head...

    what a winner.

Thanks for that nice reminder, MJB - I was just reeling after the Railroad Earth show at Lee's Palace last week (Johnny Grubb kept me in line all night) but any reminder of BSS is worth my time.

Anyway, the 'filter' is probably a wah pedal or a tweaked knob, as it engages a down sweep some notes and not others, and doesn't sound as regulated as an LFO wah sweep.
