I was just wondering, there are all these different exotic woods used on basses, where do they come from? I've never seen a bubinga tree, or any tree with spalted wood?
  2. Bubinga grows in central Africa.

Spalting occurs when a fungus infects a tree. This is fairly frequent.

The spalting only happens after the tree has fallen, IIRC.
