so... how many people have made a bass out of ONE single piece of wood... I know Ritter has some on their site, but i want to hear some personal stories about this...

yes i'm curious about doing this myself, so i want to see how well it works:hyper:

Well, no experience so far, but the bass I'm building right now is a prototype for a design that I intend to build one piece in future builds if it turns out well.

Well, probably from one laminated slab actually.

No reason it shouldn't work, other than the fact that usually heavier woods are used for the neck than what you would want in a body. Mine's quite thin and small in the body, so I figure I can get away witth it.

i've seen it done on guitars , no basses though. sounds
like an endeavor . pain in the butt, but if you've a really
cool piece of wood , it could be awesome .

    something you'd be able to get 12" x2" x 40" narrows the
    choices. what's available?

might be interesting to see what could could cut out of a lumber yard 2x12.

Of course, for the price of all that waste wood, you could probably buy some much nicer wood for a conventional design.

a lumber yard 2x12 is crummy white pine these days ( in GA)

yellow pine could do nicely . don't see it much anymore
    commercially.

I was looking at a 2x12 this weekend, pretty straight grain, clear for at least 4 feet between knots. Then I saw the tag on the rack: "Douglas Fir Green." So, no way of knowing what shape it might end up after drying.

it seems a shame to use a huge piece of wood for a single bass though, when you could cut it up and make 3.

    wow, interesting!
I don't have a lot of confidence in a single piece of wood, no truss, no lams. Do you feel like it will be stable it's whole life?
Seems any movement in the wood could have serious effect on the entire instrument.

do builds like this stand the test of time?

cool subject, thanks for that link.

From what he states, it's a pretty old piece of wood.
