Buster Williams Interview

Courtesy of pianist George Colligan's blog JazzTruth. You can find it here. George has had a working relationship with Mr. Williams since about 1995, which I think contributes to the candid nature of this interview.

Many memorable passages, but this one stuck out:

GC: So I assume you believe in the philosophy of apprenticeship?

BW: Thats the thing thats missing these days. Thats the thing that can possibly destroy the music. I say possibly because I dont think the music will ever be destroyed. We can sink to the lowest level, but well always rise again. But the mentor-disciple relationship is absolutely necessary. Its a requirement for learning this music. Without it, theres always going to be something missing in a person who has not experienced that relationship.
