Buying my first Upright Bass - Please advise!

I have been a pro electric player for several years. I am going to purchase an upright bass soon and am seeking some advice. I will be playing combo jazz and contemporary church music one to three times a week. Little if any bowing. My price range is only $1000-1500.

I am curious about what size bass to get: 2/4, 3/4, or 4/4? What is the typical maintenance on an upright? I've read about planing. How often should I do that and how many years can a neck be planed before it must be replaced? What woods should I look for? No "ebonized" fretboards, right? Ebony only? But I guess it's not called a fretboard.

Please advise on these or any other issues you might think of. Thx!
