Buying Used.. Head or Cab?

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by Chris3142, Jan 12, 2002.

  1. Okay, well i'm planning on buying a new rig soon, probably the Ampeg 6x10 along with an Ampeg B2R head, unless i can find a B4R head at a very good price. But what i'm really wondering is which piece would be more reliable to buy used? the head or the cab? I'm wondering this because i'd like to save a little bit of money, but i figure i can buy one used, and one new. thanks for any input

A used cab would be my preference. The main reason is that cabinet/speaker problems are obvious, IME, when you crank some decent volume through them.

Heads, on the other hand, can have problems that are hidden until they've been used for a while. Sometimes, all it takes is the next bump you give it to make it malfunction.

If something did go wrong with either component, cabs are often cheaper to have worked on than heads. Amp head problems often require some diagnostics ($$$) before the cause is isolated.
  3. specifically, buy my ampeg svt3 pro!

;-) very reliable and under warranty :)
