Buzzing pickup

  1. I have a very nice schaller double jazz pickup, it could probably be called vintage now, i got it as new old stock and it worked great when i threw it in my bass, soon after, i got a new old stock schaller bass j pickup and put it in the neck position. i cant remember if i put the strings back on and tried it or just plugged it in without strings, but after i put in that pickup, my bridge pickup had a permanent buzzing, but, i was wondering if pickups would buzz if there were no strings on the bass?? never really thought of it til i got a new double j and it buzzed until i put the strings on.

    FWIW:

I'd say it's a bit of a moot point (stringless bass?), but just from pup checks, seems they hum regardless.

  3. well my bass didnt have strings cause i had just replaced a different pickup and i was checking if it was wired properly.
maybe ill throw that double j back in some time and see if it buzzes
