Just hooked up my Heritage SVT CL with two PN 210s and for some reason there is a buzzing sound when playing my Fender Jazz bass. I have passive Bartolini pickups in the Jazz and when I turn the tone knob down, the buzzing goes away. I plugged in my active basses and no buzz. Anyone have any suggestions?

  2. Have the Jazz checked out. May have a bad connection inside or need shielding.

What is strange is there is no buzz when I plug into my smaller practice amp.

is it a buzz that might also be called a hum, from the electronics? or something like a rattle, or fretbuzz?

  5. SVT-CL has A LOT more gain (amplification) than your small practice amp ;)

It's a constant hum that sounds like a buzz that gets louder when the volume is turned up (even when not playing). When I plug into the -15db input, it almost goes away. It also goes away completely when the tone knob on my bass is turned down.

Take a look at the wiring of the tone pot. A couple of the lugs may have gotten squished enough to touch or allow extra wire length/sloppy solder to touch.

Actually, I just plugged directly into my small PA and the hum/biz is also present. Time to go see Mike Lull!

Aren't some Barts single coil? Sounds like single coil hum to me.

Strange that I have never noticed it before. If it is single coil hum, is there a way to eliminate? They are 94Js.

Yep, they're single coils and it even says something about single coil hum on their website. You can shield the cavities but that isn't foolproof. Some people consider the sound of single coils worth the hum because humbuckers do change the sound and aren't as bright, so you just make sure the cavities are shielded as good as you can and hope it's not too bad. Most of the time the noise will get eaten up in a live setting, but if you use distortion you'll hear more of it, and if the wiring's really bad it'll hum. There are some places I play where I avoid single coils for that reason, but I have them on some of my basses and have no intention of changing them over because they sound good on those basses. Just the price of doing business.

  12. ^+1 I have exactly the same problem with my active fender jazz, in studio it is very noticeable if there is any interferance nearby or bad electrical wiring, the pickups will hum like mad. An electric fence running off the same power circuit will be especially noticeable. Anything that creates an electromagnetic field within range of the pickups will cause it...

Stages with heavy lighting seem to cause it as well as they draw a lot of power, although the new LED stuff seems much better.

Only the same way that Fender does, by having the neck and bridge pickups reverse wired and reverse magnetic polarity so that when both are run at the exact same volume they act as humbuckers. Otherwise, no, you have to live with it.
