So I recently took delivery of a beautiful rosewood neck/fretboard Stealth black 4 string HH Stingray.. I had it professionally set up, with the action as low as it can go with only a little bit of fretbuzz now.. There is one fret that's a bit high which I plan to get repaired but for now the setup is good. My question is two fold.. 1. Why is it that (at least on mine) the bridge PU is significantly louder than then when I'm in "all coils" middle position, and then when I got to forward PU, the volume seems to go back up and the tone actually gets more treble than in the "All" position? Shouldn't the middle position be the loudest? 2. What mode do you play yours in for the best clean tone? I like the "Classic" SR sound of the bridge PU but It is a bit on the thin side and I was wanting to get a more rounded tone. The 2nd position seems to sound good to me. Thanks in advance
For me, position 4 (coils 1&4), and position 5 (bridge soloed) work best for me. I cover 90% of the gig in position 4.
Do you find that position 5 and 1 are more similar than different? Compared to my Jazz basses, I am not seeing as much of a difference in deeper tones from the forward pickup.
I also play an HH and what you're hearing with both pups on full is natural for a 2 pickup bass. Not only is there a very slight volume drop when you use this position, it also does a slight midrange scoop making it sound like it's less volume when you're actually just not hearing as many mids. 90% of the time, I use the bridge pup with all three bands boosted just a bit. Helps add a fullness that I like. If I want the tone a little rounder sounding, I'll use either the 2 inner coils or the 2 outer coils.
