    ahhhh, lightwaves.

if you didn't know by now, i recently got my lightwave sonus COMPLETELY overhauled.

    shocking, the difference.

i'll be posting samples at the yahoo "altguitarbass" group this weekend.

there's one of my original lightwave zon, and a bunch of my MTD K5 there now.

let me know if you want to url.

  4. Ah yes, I'd love a URL!

    Thanks!

  5. Wow, thanks, Fred. I'm happy with my lineup now. All have a unique voice and play great.

BTW, Fred's a monster player - anyone who can play "Donna Lee" has my attention and respect. I'd love to hear THAT on the LW!

I'll work on some clips. "C" scale okay?

    da5id: blue springs MO?!?!?!?!?!

i think i used to go to an underground comix shop there in the 70's.

435 east from johnson county kansas? to the 70? man, i don't remember.

    no?

    f

  8. Well, I came into this world in '82, so I'm uncertain as to the existence of any underground comics shops before that time. :D

But I-70 does run straight through Blue Springs, so it's likely to be the same place you're remembering. Ah, it's such a wonderfully small world after all.

  9. Cool clips, fred!

What I'm really looking for as far as comparisons go is just an idea of which would cut through better between a Lightwave or Sonus Custom (both fretless). I'm thinking about pursuring fretless-only playing, but my main love is heavy music. As such, cutting through is a major issue. I've already discussed this a bit with Mr. Rader over there, and he recommended the two Zons.

Dude, ur 94 years old? Whoa.... :D

  14. We never heard from Mr. Johnson in this thread, so I'm going to bump it in addition to asking a quick question of you people with Zon Lightwave basses:

How aggressive can you get the Lightwave to sound? I'm exploring the feasibility of using a fretless in heavier music (like Opeth, if you've heard them). Mainly, I'm wondering about the Lightwave's ability to cut through a mix compared to say, a Sonus Custom.

    da5id:

with my new system 2 upgrade for the lightwave, i had the lightwave boys tweak the midrange sweep/gain values.

    what a difference!

she can gnarl with the best of em.

i haven't played a sonus custom enough to comment.

i tell ya though, the new electronics are phenominal! lots of bite compared to before.

i may have to brush off my roland vg8 and fire up FruityLoops 3.55 and record some heavy tracks with the LW.

While its not as heavy as say, Opeth, Cynic or Death, take a listen to the band M.I.R.V. Craig McFarland, in addition to being a super nice guy, plays a fretless sonus 4 on a couple tracks, notably the song "cool". While its not really a great song, you can get a feel for what it'd sound like. Also, I believe the LW gets alot more fundamental from the strings, so your low end presence will probably beefier with the right eqing than if it were a mag'd pick up bass.

In conclusion, Ithink you should hop on it da5id ;)

I'll be honest with ya, recording onto my PC hasn't been a real high priority. I'll see what I can do.

    I'm still in awe...
