Can a micro get this kind of tone...?

Hey all. Unfortunately, I live in a town that has nil for bass equipment or knowledgeable sales people. It's just not like having the old Santa Ana, Hollywood and Fountain Valley GCs like in the old days.

So, in my search for an affordible micro head, I have to research on line, and rely on your respected experience. I'll probably have to order on line.

So, I get the feeling many of the new micros have that hifi, clanky kind of tone without the fat low mids I used to love in my old SVT and V4b. Can they, and which micro can get that fat tone. I stumbled on Frank Valley & The Four Season's Oh What A Night and realize the bass player has a tone pretty close to what I'm looking for; fat tuby low mid, but with mid-midrange that's articular but smooth. I still like percussiveness of say Roco too.

Thoughts? I still like to slap here and there. Wondering about the PF500, but it's twice the size and weight of something like an mb500. I would also like the option of post eq DI.

Thanks for humoring another tone question.

The Ampeg SVT 7 Pro is the closest I've heard to the SVT sound. The Streamliner also sounds very tubey but in a different way from the SVT. The PF500 is also pretty terrific and has a preamp based on the 7 Pro's preamp, but the 7 Pro is better sounding to my ears. None of them will be quite as good as the real thing, but those are the ones that are closest IMHO.

Are you against using a pedal?

I have played, at a store, a 7Pro with a Tech 21 VT on the front end and it was as close as you can get to that all tube SVT tone. The same pedal thru a few other micro heads sounded close, but not quite the same.

Then I set up the VT on an all tube Fender Bassman combo that had an old EV 15 in it, and that was just incredible. I am currently saving the money to buy that setup. :)
