Can I just plug into the cab?

    My neighbor is selling me an ampeg cab for $200 (he paid $800) and I want to know If I can just plug in or do I need a head?

    No, you can not plug straight into a cab... unless your bass has a built in power amp.....

    Cabs don't have any power source on their own, and therefore can't function without a head (a preamp and a power amp or both in one unit).

    no you need a head your bass wont drive the cab.

    check out some of the FAQs in the FAQ sticky

    essentially your bass puts out a "low level" signal.
    this low level signal is suitable only for driving a preamp (one component of a head).

    a preamp amplifies this low level signal into a "line level" signal suitable for driving a poweramp (the other component of a head)

    a poweramp amplifies a line level signal into a "speaker level" signal suitable for driving speakers.
