Can I use a short scale bass for very low downtuning?

I have been using standard tuning for a variety of genres for many years but lately I've been getting more and more into heavier styles, specifically doom. You can't realistically expect to play doom in standard tuning (at least, none of the best bands who represent this style such as Electric Wizard, Sleep, High on Fire do, afaik) so I'm going to have to begin learning much lower tunings.

Is it conceivable to play a Gibson SG (which have always been called EB in the past) in some crazy low tuning like C or A? A 30.5 inch scale length will probably be useless with such loose strings, right? I feel like I'm going to be obligated to get a Precision Bass whether I want to or not... and I don't. Any advice?
