can you bow without rosin?

    Hi guys,
    i'm a newbie to bowing, i got mine today but havent had a chance to buy any rosin yet, anyway i want to try it out but i thought i better ask if it stuff the bow if i try using it without rosin.

    you can....but it will sound like poo

    rosin provides a surface on the hairs of the bow suitable for the string to grip on and vibrate the string.
    with a brand new bow with a brand new bass it probably wont work too well without rosin.
    make sure you buy double bass rosin and not cello or violin rosin.
