So I've been working my way through the great Ken Burns documentary series Country Music and I noticed this unusual looking headstock peeking out from behind Willie Nelson onstage. The photo appears to be mid to late 60s, but I thought that bass looked like it time travelled from the late 70s or 80s. Anyone recognize it? Willie Headstock.jpg

Wow - that's one I have yet to see. A few 60's Japanese basses (Norma, St George, Guyatone) had hs shapes similar but not exactly like this one. If the lettering was only more in focus... WINNTON? KINGSTON? There were so many different 'brand' names (many made by the same factories) then along with the more recognizable names. Decipher the hs badge - identify the bass.

My Photoshop skills (IrfanView skills, actually) are pretty sub-par. If only someone with more skill (and Photoshop) could take a stab at it.

Anyway, I also thought it was pretty cool to see Willie playing a Mustang.

I think that bass was shown somewhere else in the show. I swear to god it said Burns or Baldwin.

BALDWIN is a possibility as far a the badge - but have never seen a Baldwin hs design like that.

Could that possibly be a music store sticker? My dad had a farm implement dealership and he would put stickers with the store name on the equipment. They looked very similar to that one.

Tiesco had some angular headstock designs back then, but I can't find anything that really matches this one on a quick search. Hmmm....

Yah - quite a few did the same general shape but this one is very narrow.

The reference book I have "History of Japanese Electric Guitars" by Frank Meyers is very thorough but what it could have included was a page or two of hs badges. He does have a few pages of pics of the 130 different pu's made in Japan in the 60's. Pretty remarkable.

Scanning the book, these brands all had a similarly shaped hs design (but not the same as the one in question)
