I'm currently looking at two different basses, for a big upgrade either a: Musicman 20th anniversary Stringray 5 HH or Fender American Jazz Standard V with a John East J-Retro pre-amp upgrade Both are second hand....there's a big gape in the price, the musicman being the more pricy. The main use will be in a live setting, probably no amps just yet running thru DI straight to the desk. Thanks
I realise it's not the most helpful answer, but it's the most honest one. Go with the one you like the most! And by that I mean, which one do you prefer the sound of for your requirements? Which one 'feels' better? Personally I'd probably go with the Jazz as I feel the 2 p/ups will be more versatile... IMO.
The Stingray also has two pups but I completely agree with the rest of your post. He should pick the one that feels the best to him. I personally prefer the neck on the Jazz and the build quality of the Stingray.
They're very different beasts sound wise, do you prefer humbuckers or single coils? And I agree, when you pick them up, which feels right.
thanks guys, I'm playing some this weekend hopefully so I'll get an idea of feel then, and sound too. Cheers
If your going straight into a di then the jazz might be the way to go. The build quality and playability of the stingray are top notch imo. Really I don't think you can make a bad choice here, though I think more people like the B string of the musicman better.
