I've recently discovered Funk, and holy afro i'm lovin it. I downloaded all the Tower of Power I could find, and its ridiculously cool. What is Hip, Squib Cakes, Soul Vaccination... What else am I missing out there, give me some Funk bands to try out. Also, I just taught myself to slap (at least audible notes from amp) learning "play that funky music"... I don't care if its lame, its so fun to play... Hit me with that Funk...
better yet, try looking for the band from portland 'Pleasure' on fantasy records. 'Glide' has a great bass line that all should know.
ToP does rock. For a different old school funk vibe, check out any of George Clinton's offerings: Parliment, Funkadelic, P-Funk, and Bootsy's Rubber Badn. Ohio Players and Commodores have some funkay stuff... Commercial funk - hard to beat Earth Wind and Fire. The Funk101 thread in Recordings has a lot to offer, as well.
James Brown (his entire catalog!) The Brothers Johnson The Isley Brothers stuff from the 70s The Barkays Cameo Rufus The Average White Band (get their live album from the 70s, I forget the name) Sly and the Family Stone Graham Central Station Zapp Confunkshun Slave Prince--he played bass on a lot of his hits! Chic -- Nile Rogers said Bernard Edwards played with his forefinger but formed his hand as if he was holding a pick. I guess that helped his timing. I'm not only showing my age, but this is the cable music channel I fall to sleep on each night
Here's some links to some bass players that may interest you: From Funk to R&B and Blues, they are some of the best around at what they do: James Jamerson. Jr. - Motown/Funk Bros Cloud Nine: Temptations
