I was playing my Ibanez Destroyer this evening. I haven't played it for quite a while due to how happy I've been with my Hamer Blitz, but I gave it a spin just for *****. The neck is just as wonderful as I remembered it, as was the string tension, but what really struck me was how awesome the pickup sounded. It's just Ibanez's ripoff of a DiMarzio Model P with the stock volume/tone pots, but it sounded excellent--much better than I remembered it. Since the pickup is for our intents and purposes the same as the one in my Hamer (Dimarzio Model P), I think the difference is in the fact that the Destroyer has got that tone knob in there. I realized that I only like the sound of the tone knob when it's on all the way, but I also really love the unimpeded sound of a P pickup without a tone knob, which is how I have my Hamer set up. In the spirit of having one's cake and eating it, too, I want to find a way to have no tone knob and a tone knob at full alternately on my Hamer bass. My question is: can this be achieved with a 2 position mini switch? Is there a way to hook up a capacitor to a switch so that in one position it's on and in the other position, it's bypassed? If so, how do I do this--what kind of switch is required?
Yes, certainly that can be done. It's super easy. You'd just need a two-pole on-on toggle switch. The cap would go across the legs of one of the poles of the switch. A "varitone" is just five of those on a rotary switch.
I use push/pull switches to bypass my tone controls... It's explained here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jrkdesimone/3396717693/in/set-72157616015420655/
He is looking for the tone with the knob on full, not turned all the way down. With just a switch and no pot, a 250K (or 500K?) resistor needs to be wired in series to the capacitor.
Bravo! Thanks a million, guys! Especially for the schematic! I'll probably wind up using a 500K resistor...and I'll have to check what the value of the capacitor is on the tone control of my Destroyer before I buy the parts because I like the way it works with that pickup. Lately, I've been cutting the tone controls out completely. It's really helped me refine my ideas about what kind of pickups I like, but I guess that I came to realize this evening that I enjoy the bite of the tone knob at full in addition to having the sound of no tone knob at all, especially with the much more tailored and expanded setup I'm using now. Having both would be just spiffy.
I'm trying to do something similar to this. I want have an on/on switch with two different value capacitors and then use a pot to control either cap. Does anyone have a schematic for this?
