I have a Carvin LB75 and love it. I had a Fender Jazz before I bought the Carvin and it was an excellent bass as well. My Carvin is a little more versitile than my jazz due the passive/active electronics and more modern sound. The construction of the Carvin is superior to the fender in my opinion. I don't think you could go wrong with either manufacturer, they both make great sound/playing basses. If you go with Carvin get some opinions from Carvin owners on the best woods to use in construction before ordering. Carvin will build your bass just like you ask so you don't want to get crazy with strange wood selections. Welcome to Talkbass!
