I was in a band last night. We added a cello for fun. I play a 5 string bass guitar. My question is what is the tuning for a cello. I do not wish to musically step on the cello, so i would like to know where to stay away from.

I think and upright bass is the same tuning as a 4 string bass guitar.

What is the lowest note that is played on a traditionally tuned cello?

On your bass, It's the C on your A string, third fret.
Your low C (on the B string) will sound exactly one octave below the lowest note that the cello can play.

    Hope this helps,
    Marco
