Chances are this has to be stolen, right?

    I'd ask the seller why.
And if he says "That's the way we got it in a trade" then I'd ask why they didn't question the original owner.

That's exactly what they said, "We purchased it from eBay this way".

Seems sketchy, but I'm sure some of the Music Man experts can explain why someone would take off all that hardware to remove the plate and then put it all back without it.
That's the thing about buying without trying...it's a bit of a gamble.

  5. Maybe it's a poor Aliexpress/DHGate knockoff?

Is it priced around normal market value, or does it seem too good to be true?

Never seen that style battery box on a Stingray, all the ones I've ever seen have the metal plate

I've owned 4 Stingrays with this same battery box. Nothing Strange there. Older models and Classics have the metal plate style.

Same here, all my 'Rays have had the plastic battery box.

Either stolen or they put the plate on another bass to make it appear to be a legit EBMM. The other possibility is that the plate cracked, although unlikely.

Pretty strange the plate's gone. I would ask the seller and ask why, if anything to answer that question in your head. Resale value (should you want to sell it later on down the road is affected by not having that serial number) so I don't know, I'd pass on it personally.

Is the seller willing to give you the original eBay seller's name?

Also, does anyone know if EBMM puts serial numbers anywhere else on their instruments (ie. Neck heal, neck pocket, pickup route, etc.)? If so, then it could be interesting to have the seller locate the serial number and see if it has been reported stolen.

Is it impossible to lose the plate?

I remember they busted a ring of counterfeit MM basses in NJ a while back. They weren't the AliExpress cheap and obvious copies but looked pretty close to the real deal. Wonder if this could be one of them.

Blood diamonds? Provenance is important and you wouldn’t want to support a criminal outright, but what’s the deal here. Makes you feel uncomfortable enough, then walk away.

There has been at least one person here who's neck plate cracked, and EBMM gave them a blank one as a replacement. (they don't stamp plates in house, its an outside vendor)

Musicman switched to plastic compartments in the late 90's. Metal ones are only on the Classics now.

If it isn't a sign of being stolen, then it's the sign of a careless owner. I'd walk away.
