Changed strings and set up a cheap bass.

I put on D'Addario XLs and did a basic set up. The intonation is still off just a bit, but I doubt anyone would notice it live. If I shim the neck, I can get the action super low. I may do that tomorrow. The frets are in great shape.

That bass is a great example of not having to spend a lot of money to get a good bass.

I bought this as a DJ5 backup for $95+tax. I used it at church today, and it is a midrange machine. I can get a really thick bottom using both pickups, and the rear pickup soloed delivers some serious Jaco tone. The B string is tight with no flop and a clear tone. I am really beginning to believe that the overwhelming number of floppy Fender B strings are the result of bad string choices and poor set ups. I know that bass had a floppy B when I first played it, and that changed instantly when put on that XL.

This 100%. People should experiment more with strings before declaring that X bass has a horrible B. By the way nice playing. I would pick one up if I could fine one for that cheap.

I think bassists should consider their setups, strings, pickups, preamps, etc.....before getting rid of good basses!

Yep. I was tempted to either upgrade one of mine or let it go for another. I played with the setup and give it some different strings and....it's a keeper for sure. Even with stock electronics! ;)

Nah. It's just resting-doc-face. I have the same problem.

If I am thinking of selling a bass, I have to keep myself from throwing on some strings and setting it up, otherwise I remember why I fell in love with it in the first place.

But they do need a lot of work to be better...
The frets on mine got so bad I removed them...
I now have the original neck as a fretless, and previously bought a VMJV neck as a fretted.

    Dr. Cheese,

Do you remember me thinking I had fallen out of love with one of my keepers?

It turns out that a bad batch of strings were the reason my keeper lost it's mojo. Luckily, I didn't do anything drastic!

Man, I think back to when I was young and before I really understood what a big hole credit cards can dig, I flipped bad@$$ basses that just needed a trussrod turned or a bridge tweaked.

  16. I've had that bum string problem too on my Sadowsky low B and on my Fodera E string.

Good strings is one of the most effective and cheapest way to improve your sound!

  17. On the other hand, some basses have a lousy low B that can't be fixed (been there!). If I play a bass in a store and the B string is sub par I probably wouldn't chance buying it. You just don't know if it's salvageable.
