Cheap Bridge

Discussion in 'Hardware, Setup & Repair [BG]' started by Moley13, Jun 1, 2014.

  1. Hi there,

I'm doing up a Yamaha RBX-260 and am looking for a bridge for it. The saddles don't have "tracks" and seem so have a fair bit of movement in them, leading to potentially uneven string spacing. The three I'm considering are:

    Allparts Adjustable:

    Generic? Gotoh style:

    A couple of questions:

How useful is the "adjustable" feature? How are they adjusted?
The Wilkinson doesn't seem to have tracks either... Is this ok?
What's the deal with the generic one?

Yeah so they don't have tracks. You have saddle grooves, a bridge string mounting hole and a nut at the other end of the neck. You need to remember those saddles are going to have a significant amount of string tension on them. Once tensioned they won't be moving unless you have a fairly vigorous technique. Worry about intonation and action.

The first one has the black saddles nested in a chrome block. The saddles have two screws that move them up and down. The block slides (by pushing on them PIA) in the channel to intonate and they lock in place with the screws ( in the holes on the chrome block). You can get them way cheaper on eBay. Same cast Chinese bridge: mediocre.

Wilkinson: basic Fender replacement bridge. I have one, works as expected. I tilt the two outside saddles a wee bit and that seems to keep string tension pulling them inwards preventing saddle walk.

The generic clone: best choice of the three IMO. Thicker plate may require a neck shim or grind the bottom of the saddles to go low enough.

  4. Thanks for that reply. That's the info I was after. I'll give the generic clone a go. It does seem to be the same as that first eBay link. You might find me posting here in a week for info on saddle grinding/shimming :p
  5. Just to check... do you think this would be an improvement over the stock bridge?

I would not buy the first bridge you posted. There are no intonation screws, so the saddles have to be moved by loosening a set screw and sliding them. So to set intonation the string has to be loosened and re tightened after every adjustment. It is a royal pain in the rear. The other two are fine.

  8. Unfortunately that guy would cost me US$50 to get shipped out, where the first eBay link you posted earlier will only be AUD$10 (less than US$10). If I'm going up into the US$50 range, I could get one of the more serious aftermarket ones locally.

EDIT: Basically I've already put together a cart at this place, and so the postage would be free. This is their selection of bridges, by price:
Obviously, though, if I went for the Gotoh clone $5 +$5 shipping from China is still cheaper than $20 shipped free.

I have a Gotoh 201 (black) you can HAVE. It is used, has a standard Fender 5 hole mount. I will never use it, just send me your address.

Well that's not Darwin. Was there for a couple months back in '88 or '89. Only place I'd recognise.
