Short story short: been playing bass for a band. Gig in january sometime. My parents want a $40 gift idea, I figure an effect of some sort would be best. Can't do used.

Anything any good inside that price range? Some sort of compressor maybe?

How about strings instead? For $40 they could get a couple of sets of strings.

    Monster cable.
It's overpriced but lasts you a lifetime.

you got any effect already? so it can be ruled out?

you know, you may be better saving the cash, and buying something slightly better, rather than by something, and have to upgrade it.

I'm feeling this string plan -

    I don't have any effects. I have a bass and a cheapo amp. (I'm accepting donations :( )

Saving up isn't an option. I need this as a gift idea, and I can't ask for just the money.

How long have you been playing? Effects may not be the best thing right now, who says you need something bass related?

How about a DVD set? If you're set on effects, a DOD 250 is probably something you'll use the most, is good quality and is cheap.

    A metronome?

If you don't have one, you should for practice.

or lessons, if you dont have lessons get some, just do research. if you're only gonna get a few lessons make them worth it. if you get a great teacher even one lesson will improve your ability if you do the work.
