I suddenly realised during a music lesson today that I can get an awesome tone from the most battered, cheapest, deadest Rockwood jazz bass.

I've been using this bass for a long time (The Traben won't fit in my gigbag, and the bubinga on the Warwick is too heavy to take to school unless I'm being examined) and I'm not sure what it is, but I just went from hating the bass to loving it. The only thing I can think of that I changed was the amp, from a new Carlsbro silverfaced 80 watt keyboard amp, to an old blackfaced 65 watt keyboard amp. Instead of being farty on the low end, it's very tight, and instead of being muddy it's very rounded and growly, like a jazz should be. The strings haven't been changed or even taken off in about 3 years... Can this really be the amp that made all the difference?
