So far from what I've found online this is the only USB mixer/audio interface that will allow multi track recording through garageband. I can't believe that is true. Can anyone suggest a cheaper alternative that will allow me to hook up and record 4 separate channels?

The catch, is that I don't fun firewire so it has to be USB2.0

A Mac with no FW port? post your budget so those trying to help don't have to look up the price of the item you are referencing for your budget.

I run the 16 channel version of the mixer you mentioned.

all 18 channels work great @ 24 bit fyi. (XP)

sounds good, some say pre's aren't boutique ...

you can apply a 15-20% coupon and get this or any product for le$$ at least. (see TB hot_deals)
