I put the pickups from an Epiphone Les Paul in a $300 Fernandez Dragonfly X once.
Seymour Duncan's in a $59 ebay p bass. The pick ups cost more than the bass!
I put a Barden Strat pickup into a Bronco. Totally worth it.
i put a duncan MM pickup in an ibanez mikro, and am planning to put mustang P/J pickups into an ibanez GSR100EX - each bass costs $179 brand new.
I put a EMG MM pickup and preamp in a Dean Hillsboro single. The money would have been better spent on charity.
I put a pair of Darkstars ($300+ at the time IIRC) in a T-40 (sans pickups) that cost me $100. An odd choice perhaps, but the T-40 is one of the only basses that Bisonics will drop right into and I already had a stock T-40 that I liked alot.
Completed! T-40 with Darkstars! Added: band practice report!
Sounded awesome and played great (I love the T-40 neck), but was a bit too heavy.
Eventually I replaced the body with a mahogany body that didn't end up much lighter. Eventually sold just about everything but the pups which now are destined for a custom Mudbucker-Telebass style LowdownBass that should be ready in May.
SPB-1s in a $20 charity shop P bass copy. Total waste of money.
$32 set of GHS Pro PB pups into a new $49 Baltimore bass. Sounds good and plays very nicely.
I put Dimarzios in my Hondo back in the day.
Duncan pickup and pre in a SBMM Ray 4
Made a giant killer
EMG Geezers in my SX P. I paid $50 for the bass. $100 for strings and $200 for pickups.
I like it.
Dimarzio Model P in a 50€ short scale P bass. After a year I swapped them back because the original pickup sounded just as good
If I end up converting a Jazz to P/MM I might put the Kent Armstrongs is a £100 Harley Benton, although the stock pickups are actually that bad...
Put Fralins Jazz pups in an SX bass and it worked out well.
Voodoo pickups in my vm fretless.
i put a set of Bartolini P/Js in a Squier P Bass Special, $250 new.
I put a Dimarzio Area J pickup in the bridge position of a $180 Squier Jaguar SS. The stock, P-style neck pickup worked fine, for me.
I didn't do it, but I picked up a Spector Performer a year ago that a previous owner had swapped the pickups for "non-Spector branded" EMGs and added and an active preamp to. I paid $200 for the bass.
Put Nordstrands into a Brubaker Brute.
Both the pickups and the Brute cost ~$350, separately.
I feel like @Dark Horse has some stories to tell about this.
