A young man decides to study the martial arts. He hears of a great master who is said to be the best teacher. He makes the long journey to speak with him.

Young man: "Master, I have come a great distance to be able to train with you. I wish to become a master of the martial arts myself. I will dedicate myself totally and completely. How long must I train to become a master?"

    Master: "Ten years."

Young man: (Slightly dejected). "I will train twice as hard as all of your other students master. I will dedicate every waking moment to becoming great. How long then will it take?"

Master: "Well then, it will take 20 years."

Young man: (Confused, frustrated). "20 years? I will train even harder. How long master?"

    Master: "40 years."

Young man: "Why is it master, that every time I say I will train even harder, you say it will take twice as long as before?"

Master: "Because, when you have only one eye on your training and one eye on your goal, you have only half of your focus on your training."

It is often so easy to become distracted from our practice with promises of record deals, performances, competitions and comparisons. I believe my greatest acheivements in bass playing have been made when my mind was free of these worries, and I could dedicate my focus to the moment, with no thought of some specific acheivement, but just to play to play and to learn.

I thought this might be relevant.

But dreams don't need to have motion
    To keep their spark alive
    Obsession has to have action
    Pride turns on the drive

...A spirit with a vision is a dream with a mission...

    ...From the point of igniton
    To the final drive
    The point of the journey
    Is not to arrive
    Anything can happen...

...From the point of entry -
Untill the the candle is burned
    The point of departure -
    Is not to return
    Anything can happen...

    Excellent post as always jazzbo...

Excellent post, Jazzbo. This one is going straight to the printer and then hung on the wall.
  10. ok i have one... here goes:

Me and my good friend Eric WIlliams were playing SHadow Warrior back in tha' day ( heeh ) and i was mauled by a giant gremlin. he makes fun of me saying that " i was killed by a gremlin" and i returned by " but it was a giant gremlin". his reply" It doesn't matter if it was a giant gremlin, the point is, you were killed by a gremlin."

It doesnt matter how large the goal will end up being, it is still the same small goal.

  12. Never underestimate the East. They are way ahead of us in many things, philosophy is one of them, IMHO. Ah, I must brush up on my reading. Thanks for reminding me, Jazzbo. ;)
