...sigh.... http://www.activebass.com/basics/arps.asp?r=2&q=1&v=4&d=2&DataAction=Find+It http://www.activebass.com/basics/arps.asp?r=2&q=2&v=4&d=2&DataAction=Find+It
BIG JAZZBULLY, Careful now! That "sigh" could be construed as being mean and critical, and we can't have that here at PCTB. I believe the correct response is, "okay....here's your Pablum....open wide....no need to chew or anything....GOOD JOB, buddy!!". Get it right next time, willya? MY DURRL
SPAZ PEZ, Notice that I gave you the link for the triads with the names of the notes, as opposed to just dots. Good luck. It's a great website, it may be fun to get familiar with the names of the notes for all the major and minor triads. But, it's okay if you don't want to. DURRLY MAN, Hear me now and believe me later and pay attention some time next week, it was just a sigh because I was tired that day. That's all. Seriously. Nothing else. That's it. You know, like "Whew! Long day! Now, let me give people some tabs!" You know. And further, I wish to applau TAB MESS just for asking, because really, all that matters is that you have a bright shiny new guitar (I'm reminded of Jeff Berlin's BP article) and internet access. We'll do the rest for ya! ....sigh.... (just tired, that's all!)
Relax... TONS-O-RAISINS wont have to do anything - I was counting on HASBRO to tilt his head back and flick his Adam's Apple at no extra charge....
Why didn't someone just try to explain to him (besides Jazzbo, in what seems an offhanded way) that maybe understanding WHY THE CHORDS ARE BUILT THE WAY THEY ARE might have made him a far better bass player? Sheesh, he probably doesn't even understand what you guys were even talking about. I thank (whatever you believe in) that my early posts here weren't received that way. FF (Maybe I'm just sticking my nose where it doesn't belong. I'm tired too )
Because surely we can say what the heck we like as long as it doesn't contravene the "Rules" - even then, I might be forced to say here, that I respect everyone - but in real life, my view is that respect has to be earned and that if people don't help themselves then they can't expect to get others to help them! That's what I think and nobody is gong to change my mind - especially on this subject!! You asked the question - do you want the truth or should I just delete this and leave it unanswered?
is it really OK or are you being sarcasstic? I don't know the names for all the major and minor triads, I just remember the shapes and play what sounds cool. hey, I even know the diminished triad, but don't ask what the notes are. the same with the modes, I know what the root of the chord is and the mode that used to construct it and go from there. I don't have to think about what the notes are. I could figure them out if I want, but I just remember the shapes, its easier
CS You'll find, that if you don't understand the why behind those shapes, you really won't be able to use them effectively. Truly understanding the mechanics behind scale / chord construction, and chord function, will allow you to begin to understand music in a way that will allow you to freely express yourself. Yes you should know what C-E-G and D-F-A are and how they relate.
I think have a basic understanding of how chords are constructed, I mean I can figure out a lot by the shapes, the different tones, and how they relate to each other. but, I still have a lot to learn. I figure out a lot on just the name of the chord, I mean you can see when to subsitute the 3rd with whatever... I see the chords as shapes with each tone being a number, and I can see how the chord is built with the numbers, know what I mean? I know I should know what notes I'm playing, and sometimes I do, but so far I've gotten by pretty good. I think I get onto a plateau so to speak, where I haven't learned anything new in a while. but I really don't feel binded in my abillity to express myself. maybe the stuff I'm playin just isn't too complex and my skill is sufficent. when ever I need some good chunks music theory knowledge I can always ask my wife. she has a degree in music and is a piano teacher.
I just wanted to add that I think its great that some real classy people come on here and help out some of us poor saps. I mean these guys who are super good don't have to come on here and respond to dumb questions, but they do anyway. even when they joke around a little, don't take it wrong, its a privilege just to be able to ask this stuff. about a year or so ago, a partner and I were building a Battlebot (you know like on TV). and a lot of the veterans on the Battlebot forum were really rude to the newbies. basiclly just being plain jerks. so anyway, I got out of that crap manily because its just too darn expensive. but a lot had to do with the people that were involved. I sold my Battlebot parts and used the money to put a pipe on my quad anyway, I just wanted to say thank you to you guys you know who you are...
I give up. Hey Fretless, Chump Stain, don't forget, I'm not all that unhelpful: http://www.talkbass.com/articles/articleview.php?ID=19
Ok, I think it's been covered but just a simple major and minor chord formula: Major triad: root-3rd-5th of the major scale Minor triad: root-3rd-5th of the minor scale. If you don't understand what the root 3rd and 5th are, they're scale intervals. the 3rd is the 3rd note in a major scale for a major chord. some people just say a minor triad is the root-flat 3rd-5th of the major scale, which is a different way of saying it, if that's confusing.
