Not sure if this has been posted yet but it looks like Pirastro has released a new special edition of Chordas that were developed in conjunction with Carlos Henriquez who I know is on TB sometimes. They appear to be lower tension, smaller gauge which is interesting. I certainly found the original gauges to be too big and dead sounding.

Here's what I recorded in inches for the original Chordas:

    G: 0.08
    D: 0.11
    A: 0.10
    E: 0.14

They definitely look interesting. I know that Ken Smith is using a set right now. They are certainly worth a look at if you are going to try an all gut set up. I do recall really liking the E an A strings of the Chorda set, but not the D. The low strings have that big organic quality to them that you hear on older records.

Gor-gy, can you measure them in thousandths of an inch?

    Thanks, Jake

Found this site (http://www.onlineconversion.com/length_common.htm) to be useful for such stuff.

I did the conversion for us:

    G : 2.15 = .0846"
    D : 2.70 = .106"
    A : 2.55 = .100"
    E : 3.15 = .124"

Nice! We'll have to get them added to the String Gauge Sticky.

I have a set on my bass right now. They are pretty nice. After I've played them for about a month, I will be able to say more about their sound. I am loving them at the moment and I doubt I will go back to any other types of strings after these.

No, I have not. I have a used set I bought from a fellow TBer, but I reckon it will be a while 'til I put it on. I wish I had two basses, so I could compare at the same time, but I reckon they would sound different because of the different basses anyways.

Nice playing and great sound. Would love to hear more about these strings.

Eyeballing the gauges posted above, they don't look that different from the originals. The E looks thinner and the variances on the other strings seems like it might almost be too small to notice. I wonder if there are other differences, like windings. Or am I not seeing things clearly?

  18. The D is lighter than the standard set. When I bought Gamuts, I specifically bought a light D after reading about Carlos' Chorda set. My Gamut light D is way more defined than the medium it replaced. I imagine the same would hold true for the Chordas.

The Artone set I got follows the same light D philosophy. The G is .092 and the D .110. The D sounds nice but it feels a bit floppy at times compared to the G.
