Just a heads up: On March 21st, Friday at 2pm, US Eastern Standard time (19:00 in Cologne, Germany), Christian McBride will be guesting with the WDR Big Band in a video live stream. You'll be able to see it here:

WDR Big Band & Christian McBride

Christian & the band will be playing his new arrangements on tunes like "Killer Joe," "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning," (CM bows the melody), "Black Messiah" (one of Cannonball's funky tunes), "Used ta Could," etc.

I heard the rehearsal the other day, and it's a very nice project—as you can imagine.

You can also comment on the stream and follow the proceedings on twitter:

Or, if you happen to be in the Cologne area, you could win one of 15 tickets to attend the performance in the studio for the live stream by entering the ticket lottery here.

They usually archive the videos for a month afterwards, but I don't know if that is the case here. I'll keep you posted.

I hope my company is not expecting too much out of me tomorrow afternoon!

    (Thanks for the heads up!)

Christian's using a plywood with D'Addario Hybrids. Fishman Full Circle. Recorded with a Schoeps MK41 & Neumann, plus DI into the board.

Rats - I'm always overly optimistic that work constraints will allow for these dalliances. I'll also be watching for any video postings...

    I'll keep you posted . . .

  10. Yes, you should've, and posted it.

Alas, I missed the event altogether. Saw Christian McBride with some other guys (Chick Corea and John McLaughlin, Kenny Garrett, and Brian Blade) in 2009, and would love to see/hear this. Fingers crossed the WDR w/ McBride gets posted.

Many thanks in advance Mr. G!

Yes, they're a great bunch of players.

BTW, the bass was rented from Daniel Kress, who has a nice bass shop in Cologne.

I just saw Ron Carter playing the same bass last night at a club here.

  14. Interesting bass.... You said it was a plywood ? With an extension. I had a blond german plywood from maybe the 50's in my shop recently and it was one of the loudest basses I have heard. Very similar. Christian can really pull a sound out of an instrument.

Cool! Thanks for the link! In the thick of the Belmont Jazz Festival right now (played Monday night and my Bass Ensemble played last night) but I will watch it after playing with John Fedchock on Saturday with the Faculty Group.
I've seen Christian in Nashville with the Five Peace Band and an All Star Group and he's very, very impressive!

It's a very generic sounding bass, but of course Christian will sound like Christian and Ron sounds like Ron ... On the same instrument.

    It's a good week! :)
As we say in Nashville, "Sometimes it's Chicken, sometimes just Feathers!" ;)

Awesome - thanks for posting it!

I only got through the first couple tunes last night (darn early wake up for work!), but will definitely catch the whole thing asap...
