It has just been announced that Circuit City will be liquidated, closing all (over 500) stores, approximately 35000 to lose jobs. :(

Will this affect any TalkBass members?

Damn! I heard rumblings about this yesterday...I mean, I have no love for the chain, but that just really sucks.

  3. I remember someone telling me a couple months ago that CC had overhauled it's sales strategy some time ago in order to cut costs.

They [allegedly] basically got rid of their trained and commissioned sales staff and went with less trained and lower paid employees. The new people didn't know much and sales dropped. That's what I heard at least.

This is old news, Circuit City had announced this 2 months ago.

They closed the one by me around then.

That's too bad. I much prefer CC over BB. The general knowledge of product was higher. Returns and servicing was a breeze - no lines, no convulted return policy. Most of my pocket and medium size electronics were purchased there - laptop, Wii, portable DVD, games, cameras, DVD player, computer accesories. I guess the lack of noticeable traffic when I went there in the last 6 months spelled their ultimate demise. Wonder what will happen to any of my outstanding warranties?

Yea, we have their lame step-brother The Source (By Circuit City).

Still, didn't these guys file for Chapter 11 months ago?

  10. Yeah they did, but now they are closing. Big difference.

I stopped going to CC years ago due to the sales staff's lack of product knowledge (at least at the Tulsa store). I started going to Ultimate Electronics, and it was a much better experience overall.

A guy I know works there. He found out about a week ago he was one of the ones being let go. Now EVERYONE is. Doesn't really make it any better.

The CC around here is like a ghost town. I loved shopping there for the easy in and easy out. Both BB's up here are zoo's from the moment they open until the doors close each night.

Too bad, I am going to miss them.

Yes but recently they said they might have found a buyer, but I guess that fell through.

Their scam of a going out of business sale did nothing to save anyone some money.

There were no huge deals I saw. Its as bad as Linen & Things where they marked the prices up!

Not old news, the liquidation hearing was this morning. 2 months ago or so they closed around 155 stores. As of today, they will be closing ALL the stores, about 560 more.

My CC experiences were rather lame in recent years--pushy salespeople, limited selection--and I'd heard similar stories from others. It was understandable to me that BB was eating their lunch. But lately, yeah, BB has become so successful/busy that going in is a chore, and it's harder to get quality assistance.

Fortunately, the Chicago area has a really good local store with just as many choices as the big guys, sometimes more (Abt Electronics). I make all my major purchases there.

  19. That sucks. Omaha had one for a while that closed several years back. Decent store, although they put theirs a block from Nebraska Furniture Mart, which is a local powerhouse. I kinda liked 'em. :(
