Congrats on a gorgeous instrument, man. I'm in line for a Dola myself -- should be done around May next year!

Thanks! It's definitely got more flame than I was expecting from the original pics of the unfinished top wood!

I'm really hoping to be ready to use it for Saturday's gig...

Ah, those three little words that bring warmth to the heart and a smile to the face: "Out for delivery"...

That is gorgeous! I do not like singlecuts at all, with the exception of this right here. Cliff is amazing!

If you MUST get a singlecut, get it from Cliff Bordwell. Beautiful. Enjoy it.

The bass just arrived safe and sound, which does not bode well for a productive afternoon at work...:bassist:

Forgive the ginormous cell phone pics, but I couldn't resist snapping a few.

The top is even more amazing in person than it looked in pictures, with the combination of the flame and the splalting making interesting details in unexpected places.

The ebony headstock facings came out looking exactly as I hoped they would, with echoes of all those cool archtop and acoustic guitars. And the "B" logo looks great! The alternating maple/ebony layers in the heel block came out supremely cool...

The neck is wide but thin front to back as I wanted, and the edges are rolled, making it wonderfully comfortable to play!

And the control pits are all exceptionally firm and smooth, something that's not always true even on high-end instruments.

Can't wait to hear how it sounds!

Thanks, everybody! The spalted top is even more striking than I expected, and it all came together even better than I hoped!

Will be able to give more of a review after I've had a chance to get home and plug it in, and should have a gig report after Saturday's show. Sadly, I'll be using a borrowed rig so won't get to put it through its paces with my Aguilar/Epifani setup until next weekend...

Congratulations, Mike! Your new bass looks incredible!

From watching this thread, other CB Bass threads, and drooling at the pictures on Cliff's website, I'm adding Cliff to my short list of custom builders for my next 6-string bass.

Hopefully you'll post a sound clip, -or six or seven!! :)

Definitely put Cliff on the short list--highly recommended!

Having the bass in hand, the craftsmanship is wonderful, as is the playability.

I've just barely started to get a feel for the tone. My first impression is that it's actually a bit smoother and warmer and a little less bright than I was expecting from the ebony board and the Bigman pickups. However, on second thought, I'm comparing it to my Curbow with its Rockwoid neck and big brass tone block under the bridge, and my Warmoth with big steel bars in the neck and 2Tek bridge. I suspect it's just a matter of getting used to the tonal palate of a new instrument.

Your bass looks amazing. What made you go with a zero fret?

I've had a couple of MTDs with zero frets, and it makes the open strings sound a bit closer to fretted notes. Not a big thing, but since Cliff had done some basses with them, I figured I'd have him do it, and it worked just as I hoped...

A couple of shots from last night's gig. She did great on her maiden voyage, even with a borrowed bass rig. I can't wait for next weekend with my Aguilar/Epifani setup!
