The case was a pleasant surprise.
The other stuff is all easy to fix.
I've been looking for a fitted Ric case for my two clone builds. The stock plastic Ric ones are crap, and $239 cheapest I can find. Apparently the case edge "feet" routinely implode with ordinary use. They have a very nice silver tolex fitted hardcase, but at $300+, a little (lot) pricey. Does your case appear to be well made? been thinking of pricing one out through a Chinese vendor like Aliexpress. Risky, I guess, i don't know how much the Chinabackers vary from the real Ric footprint. Hate to order one and have it not fit!
How's the fretwork? I played a Chinabacker in a pawn shop a couple years back, atrocious. Terminal fret sprout, no level, no polish. Buzzed like a beehive. Looked like somebody whacked them in with a ball peen hammer. I realize the quality on these varies wildly, all the factories use the same CNC files, but the actual level of finish work is all over the map. Post a review if you feel like it, curious to hear your take on it.
I'll comment on that once I have a proper nut.
It buzzes like poopie right now, because it's lefty strung through a righty nut.
Don’t know if any of you have been following this thread regarding the new TB policy that will disallow any “praise” of counterfeit basses. Presumably negative comments will be allowed? Confusion and Hypocrisy Reign. The policy is about as clear as mud at the moment, but if implemented as described, this thread is Toast. Might want to back up your photos. What’s utterly unclear is if this will be applied retroactively, or just for any future posts.
Threads Praising Counterfeit Basses Question
Don't see anything about this in the T's & C's nor in "Site News". All I've saw was your post regarding it,by P3 had yet to see any Mod or Admin input.
The mods posted it this morning on the Basses forum, with a lock on any further discussion, which was.....interesting. Now it’s gone, which is even more interesting. One of the mods finally chimed in on post #126 of my thread, so it’s real. Maybe cooler heads prevailed? Time will tell.
Threads Praising Counterfeit Basses Question
Threads Praising Counterfeit Basses Are No Longer Permitted
I asked a bunch of questions they didn’t seem to have answers for, I’m wondering if this was fully thought through, or how it will be fairly applied. Something tells me fake Fenders will not be included in the discussion ban, Hope I’m wrong.
Similar thing happened over here. The UK forum got a legal threat concerning for sale ads on clearly marked copies.
The easy solution was they banned all ads RIC related, can't sell your real deal 4001 on Europe's biggest bass forum
Folks can still post their NBDs and the like, they just can't say where they bought them.
I would never own a fake ---mine is an HOMAGE
HEY BASTARD!!! fancy seeing you here!!!
That is incorrect. Threads praising counterfeit Fenders (meaning basses that say Fender on the headstock and aren't actually made by Fender) would not be allowed. Ditto for a bass that has a butterfly on it, looks like a Fodera, and actually isn't. Ditto for Fake Gibsons, the fake Ritter that circulated years ago, etc....@Gilmourisgod seems to think it's in response to Ricks specifically; it's not. I don't know how to be more clear on that at least.
The policy went through much thought/debate for some time, and yes, we are still working out things about application. As pointed out in another thread, there's some judgment involved, like pornography, trolling, and other things. This thread would've been ok, because the headstock doesn't say Rickenbacker...meaning, it's not going to deceive someone who can read and looks at the headstock. Could it fool someone? Yes, but the tongue in cheek name versus a Rick nameplate is a distinction. Lawsuit basses also would be okay. The new policy is for basses that look exactly or nearly exactly the same, including incorrect branding, to the point that reasonably informed bass players would call them counterfeit, like a dead-on copy.
Again, the OP bass would be fine. Probably others in here would be too, although I'm not about to wade through the other 60 pages. Old threads/posts would not receive infractions. (Edit: I wouldn't do an infraction for a new one for a while either, especially for a new member that might be unaware. Would just delete and do a zero point warning.)
I am closing this for now, though, because there's now a lot of discussion that's not about the basses but about the policy, and complaints of moderation. Maybe I'll open it back up once folks see this post..but it needs to get back to basses.
Edit: reopening now.
This is my 4003 copy made by top custom guitars. It's got 24 frets and I've added 920d pups n pots. Also has a chrome plated steel pick guard which makes it a very weighty bass
After years of vigilantly pursuing, suing, or otherwise hassling makers of Ric copies, parts, logos, etc., including a failed attempt to sue Hipshot for some kind of "trade dress" infringement with their drop-n Ric style bridge, the Illustrious Mr. Hall has decided to "jump the moral shark", so to speak, by blatantly ripping off the work of a small business called "Tubeampology". They make make an injection molded plastic insert to fill the void around the treble pup opening on a Ric. Here's their website:
Rickenbacker Corp has decided to make their own version of this, curiously, using identical detailing, and even the name, "treble bezel". Here it is:
RICKENBACKER TREBLE BEZEL
The guy who invented the treble bezel, which does not infringe on Ric's copyright, since they never made, trademarked, or patented such a device, discusses this on the Rickresource Forum here:
Rickresource Rickenbacker Forum • View topic - RIC-Made Treble PUP Bezels Available!
So much for all the High Horse BS John Hall has been spouting all these years. The Tubeampology guy doesn't mention a patent or trademark, so he probably has no recourse legally, which makes it no less skeevy how Ric burned him.
The John Hall ideology of turnabout being fair play?
Gotta pay for all those re-fins somehow!
I wonder if they'll try and take over the guy who does no mod thumb rests.
Probably not as he does them for other brands as well.
I don't think they'd bother since those thumbrests are kind of a lame overpriced product to begin with, but it wouldn't be hard to offer a similar product that flowed with the guard for a lot less money without a needlessly obvious logo.
