Hey all! My band, The Daylilies, may be looking to branch out and start playing outside of our home base in the Boston area and I'm wondering if anyone might recommend any cool places to play in the larger New England perimeter outside of the Boston area but not as far out as NYC? We are a 100% original band... alt rock I guess... influences might be a little bit of the Pixies, a little Garbage, a little Beatles... female fronted... In our 40s... we wouldn't fit into hardcore, punk or folk venues. Any suggestions from people who've played around the area or who have attended shows anywhere that they particularly liked would be greatly appreciated! There are lots of places out there but it's hard to tell what's good, what isn't and what might be a good fit our genre. Thanks a ton in advance!!!
How many patrons would you reasonably expect to attract to the venue, trying to gauge size of venue. Providence, there are lots of others but here's a couple: ASKEW The Met | Live music in Pawtucket, Rhode Island
Probably not a ton, to be honest, because we're just looking to start getting a little exposure in areas where we rarely tread. Willing to pay our dues on off nights... so smaller venues.
ASKEW looks great! I will contact them with our EPK. I think The Met is probably out of our league. Thanks!!
A block away is Nick-A-Nees, tiny local bar with lots of live music and great foot traffic. Probably even easier to get a date there.
I'm a little out of the loop these days, but New London, CT has a few venues and a long history of great original bands. Hygienic Art Park is a wonderful outdoor venue, probably completely booked for this summer but it wouldn't hurt to make yourself known to them. 33 Golden Street is a tiny place but regularly hosts bands. The Social and Octane are two more. I'm not sure if Oasis is still booking or even open, but it's worth checking. I'm even more out of the loop for New Haven; there's always Toad's Place, which these days seems to be a shadow of what it was during its glory days but is still there.
Thanks! Golden Street looks like it would be great... so I just contacted them on Facebook as I could not find a booking contact. Will wait and see. A couple of the others look somewhat inactive and/or don't look like they fit our genre. This was a great lead though and I really appreciate it!!
Don't know why I didn't think of it, but a friend of mine has an indie record shop just a few doors away on Golden Street, Telegraph Records. It's a tight space, but he quite often hosts in-store performances. His name is Rich Martin.
+1. Toad's surely ain't what it used to be, but definitely worthy of consideration, if only as a badge of quasi-prestige ("Yeah, we've played Toad's"). Not sure all of these places are a perfect fit for your particular brand of alt rock, but perhaps check out: The Acoustic (a.k.a. Acoustic Café) – Bridgeport, CT Contrary to its name, this venue is not strictly for unplugged stuff. Space Ballroom – Hamden, CT Hosts everything from bands to performance art to DJs. Black-Eyed Sally's – Hartford, CT A downtown restaurant that features a variety of live music. Cafe Nine – New Haven, CT Tiny but very popular, cool venue. College Street Music Hall – New Haven, CT Tends to book only larger, established national acts, so at best, you'd probably be considered as an opener only. The State House – New Haven, CT Books some regional acts.
Because I live in cover band world, I'm not so up on the original music venues, but here goes: FWIW, Black-Eyed Sally's mostly books blues, r&b, and funky jazz bands. In Manchester CT there is The Hungry Tiger, which books stinky little bar bands (like mine) but once in a while has some mid-week original acts. Talk to Dan. In Northampton, there's a small room called Pearl Street, owned by the same people who own the Iron Horse and the Calvin Theatre. Lotta original acts. In Easthampton is the marvelous Luthier's Co-op, which I've played at many times with a traditional country band. It is a place that sells used guitars, builds custom guitars, has a performance space, and a bar. Marvelous! The link is directly to their booking page; as you'll see, they have a system, and it doesn't include money. The times I played there, people were at least generous with the tip jar. Lastly the truly funky 13th Floor Music Lounge in Florence, MA. You got to haul your stuff up the stairs, and the money is a joke, but I played there once and it seemed like a nice vibe.
Right over the border from me: Home | Riverwalk They book eclectic. Folk trios, blues quartet, Americana/Rock, mind-bending funk/soul, even a Snarky Puppy guitarist in a trio. Not sure if you'll be a good fit but you don't get what you don't ask for in this life so check it out.
I'm from Nashua and that's literally right down the street from my house! I talked to them already. We're a little too big (5 piece) and too loud for that venue, sadly, because I really like hanging out there and the people are nice!
Also, check out what’s in Northampton if you haven’t. That’s kinda the cultural center of western Mass.
