I have a red 76 Fender P , a black 84 Ibanez Destroyer , and a 2013 Banana yellow Kubicki Ex Factor . My favorite is the yellow , don't know why it just is. Plus it really stands out when I wear all black or all any color . What's your favorite ?
I like a finish on my basses that allows for the grain to show through, like on my SR1200. That said, I am really digging the Inca Silver Squier CV J bass.
For me personally, I like variations of blue, green, and aqua, but I don't let that rule my choices of instrument. It's good that we don't all like the same thing.
It must have been one of the last Factors Phil made. He did a coral finish early on that was used on the '58 Desoto, only a few were done in that colour. I would have bought one (used) but I just bought a (used) black one. I had a Sonic blue (FCS) one also. As far a colour - my 'favorite' colour has an s on the end and varies over time. My current fave is Fiesta red. Just makes me want to play it seeing it. It's at least as 'present' a colour as Banana yellow!
I'm told it may be the last one he built . Or at least one of . The story is that Phil had an older neck lying around and a body that he damaged when finishing and he assembled them and sold to DR DAV . The neck has 97 stamped on it and I have'nt checked the body yet . But for me I got it the same year it was built so that's the year I date it as . This red would look great on my Destroyer !
I have 2 basses, both Ibanez Soundgears, an SR480 in natural oiled Mahogany, and natural oiled / urethaned maple. I like the character of the mahogany better... My GAS and color choice right now is for a Squier VM PJ bass in Lake Placid Blue... I LOVE that color. A local band guitarist around here has some 1980s vintage Ibanez, don't recall the model, but it's got some crazy color shifting pearl paint job that is fun to watch as he does his thing... Goes from green, to pink, to purple, to blue and on and on...
I don't think bodies were ever dated - mine didn't have any dates marked in the neck pocket but yes, regardless of dates - it's when Phil assembled and final adjusted it that dates it. Other than being what I would imagine was a rare colour, that makes it special - I wished I could have spent an hour talking with Phil in person, he seemed like a cool guy. I almost had my chance once visiting Santa Barbara, but he had already moved back east. Enjoy playing it!
I had a Grafitti Yellow Fender Strat Plus in an alternate world when I played guitar. The yellow was always my favorite.
I have five basses of all different colours, but if I'm ever totally off my ass drunk and anywhere near someone who refinishes guitars, and I just happen to have all my Fender basses with me ... oh, and have way too much cash in my pocket, I might be tempted to get them all refinished in "Gretsch Orange" I've seen Fender P-Basses with translucent deep orange finishes and I think they look amazing!
Im super into my cherry burst on my fender dimension bass but I am a super fan of the cherry matte burst on the gibson sg 2014s
I believe that color is called sunset orange translucent. I saw a P from 2003 that color recently at a local pawn shop that was rusty and grimy and had a sticky S-1 switch, but was maybe the most beautiful bass I ever saw. Good thing they wouldn't lower the price any lower than $900 or I would have been dumb enough to buy it.
G&L has a nice shade of yellow. The color reminds me of a cheap Silvertone guitar my dad gave me in the 60's. I saw that cheap guitar listed for about $1300 once, maybe it was the one I gave away. If I had the money, I would pick this one up, but I also like most wood grain (especially neck thru) finishes and classis sunburst.
This one is my wife's favorite, she calls it my ghost bass... Its actually a P Bass Plus in black pearl burst
