Colored Oil Finishes

Discussion in 'Luthier's Corner' started by knucklehead G, May 5, 2010.

  1. Any ideas how to recreate Warwick's "colored oil" finish? On ash you can feel the grain and it almost feels waxed, but Warwick says you aren't supposed to wax it. Apparently its some sort of color + sealer + something else that feels like wax.

Any thoughts? I was thinking of taking a naked swamp ash body from Warmoth and making it look like this,

  2. I used water soluble aniline dye powder, and finished it with poly.

I think you're talking about rubbed dye?

IIRC I actually used colortone or transtint for the swamp ash(again water soluble). The powdered dye is suggested for closed-grain wood.
