I don't have 170$ to spare for a "let me try out a passive humbucker" project....

I'm totally aware that a 170$ dollars pickup might be better than a... well... 50$ pickup?

or could I get a tele bass single coil and a jazz bass pickup and wire them up as a humbucker in split/series/parallel? I'd just need to put em under a soapbar pickup cover?

You do know that a regular music man pickup is already two single coils side by side, right?

Except the MM PU has 8 mm pole pieces, Fender style PU:s use 6 mm pole pieces.

I've used the Wilkinson MM pickups in a couple of basses. They sound OK, but they use the cheaper ceramic magnet/steel rod design. I would expect the original MM design with 8 mm alnico rod magnets to sound better, though I haven't been able to make an A/B comparison.

Building that combined MM/jazz pickup from one single coils would be a challenge, as the humbucking function relies on that you have the same amount of turns on both coils.

That's not a Fender style PU, not enough polepieces per pickup. :p
