In an email from my Aussie client -

Dunk was musing this morning, wondering if mourners at Ray Dolby's funeral observed one minute's silence, or a minute of noise reduction .........

    Tasteless, but funny.

His name and namesake company are much lower profile now than in the 70s and 80s when his noise reduction technology made a big difference in how we listen to music. I really don't think the massive multitrack analog recording would have been practical without Dolby noise reduction technology.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Dolby. Thank you for your invaluable contributions to the technology of making music and cinema.

You are right. Until the advent of digital recording systems, Dolby Noise Reduction in the studio and Dolby Stereo (Surround) for theaters made it all happen.

Even the copycats may not have happened until he opened the door.
