Why is it that guitar compressors don't work for basses?
Compressors designed for use with guitar can and will work with bass.
The question is, do you like the fx sound.
Most guitarists use it as an "effect", you know, squashed sound, pumping compression. Bassists usually use it in a more subtle way, without pumping, like you do compression in the studio - that's why most bassists use rackmount studio compressors.
Also, stompbox compressors tend to degrade signal quality and add noise. But you can use them if you want that "exagerated" pumping compression mentioned above.
