If you'd be willing to go for a small rack unit instead of a pedal, I highly recommend the FMR Audio Really Nice Compressor (RNC 1773). It's around $189 direct from FMR. Easily the best compressor in that price range.

I have a Trace Elliot SM7 Pedal compressor, and I love it a lot. Talk about tightening up your notes, and you can find them for about $50-$65 bucks because people are selling old stock. Just remember if it breaks you are SOL (Gibson dropped the pedals when they bought Trace Elliot), then I will probably try out the EBS.
