In an effort to get some compression in my signal to even out note response, I've been searching for the right pedal. I found that Boss makes a bass compressor (while also researching the many other compressor options out there), however they also make a limiter enhancer. What is that?! How is that different than a compressor? And what is the enhancer "enhancing?" Finally I guess that I'd like an all-purpose compressor recommendation to even out my tone while I play bass with a pick.
Keeley Bassist is a good first compressor, it's very easy to dial in. You should read up on www.ovnilab.com
I had the Boss LMB3. A hot signal from an active bass could overload the pedal and I would get a distorted note from time-to-time. The enhance knob would bring back the highs from the bass which would suggest to me that the pedal would suck some tone when it operated 'normally'. I have read a lot of love for the Keeley and even for the Boss compressor (BXP-1 or something like that). I have the MXR M87 which is very transparent and can compress or limit.
I, as a consumer, like the sound of getting both from one pedal. Also the MXR has been recommended to me on more than one occasion, that may be the direction I go from here. Thanks.
I have the behringer with the enhance knob much like the older boss model. I have no complaints as it does what it is suppose to do. The enhance knob boosts bass and treble and cuts mids (slap). $35
If you get something like a MXR M-87 Make sure you know what you are doing with all the controls. Sometimes it is better to get a simple comp to start with and then when you get comfortable with that then move to the more feature rich comps. It is very easy in the beginning to destroy your tone and dynamics with too much compression. I know the Keeley gets a lot of love so does the Hyper Luminal and the M-87.
