I'm running a rather old computer and the hard drive is running alittle rough. I would like to format clean but need to know where to start and what to make sure I have.

Well, you should want to back up all your files, then format the drive then reinstall the system software, reformating is not very difficult, you will also have to reinstall drivers and hardware devices, so make sure you have those, most drivers can be found online though, so thats not a big concern.

What Windows version do you have?

Usually the setup offers a format option during installation.

Or boot into DOS from floppy disk and do a format c:
  4. As others have said, back up your files and make sure you have all the software to be reinstalled...

But which operating system do you use?

And also, I wold suggest defragmenting the hard disk first to see if that solves your problems.

I have my hard disk partitioned into two drives, which means that backng up prior to a format is easy. I have only had to reformat once in the past three years.
