Hi TB, I'm looking for some help wiring a harness. I'm trying to use a 3-way switch with a Jazz bass with a set of 2 concentric "stacked" pots. I thought it would be similar to other 2-pickup configurations but the interaction between the pots seems to be creating problems. I have used this same switch in a P/j bass, but that bass had one volume and one tone. I've not used this switch with a "2 separate volume" configuration, although the Seymour Duncan switch diagram I was using did indicate this is possible. Every combination of wiring options resulted in no success. I'm stuck. If you have successfully used a 3-way "on-on-on" switch with a concentric harness, please explain how you did it, or provide a diagram. Thanks!
It's functionally identical to the Les Paul guitar wiring diagram. There are two versions of that, though; one which preserves independent volume controls, and one which doesn't.
Thanks CT. I am guessing that a wiring schematic for a humbucker guitar is going to be different than for the single coil concentric set up I have. So if anybody has wired a 3 way switch into a single coil concentric harness, please provide a schematic. Thanks!
It's not different. Not really. It's physically different, in that the LP has four pots, while you have two stacked pots, but just think of those stacked pots as though they were physically separate, and it'll work. The only other difference in this diagram is that they have four-conductor pickups; if you ignore the red/white wires coming off their pickups, it's the same as the two conductors on your single-coils.
OK Todd. This makes sense. Essentially I am wiring the same way I would a P-bass, except there are 2 sets of pickups instead of 1. I'll give it a shot. Thanks.
In looking at the Stew Mac site, I found another diagram for Les Paul wiring (2 vol 2 tone), with the tone cap connected to volume and tone pots. that diagram also notes that an alternate configuration is needed for independent volume control in the middle switch position. This Duncan link (post #4) is set up like 2 P-bass harnesses wired together connected by a switch, which i would guess would offer the volume blend option in the middle position of the switch. Am I correct about that? Does anyone know for sure that the Duncan diagram in post #4 here will allow for a blending of volumes, rather than a single volume control in the middle switch position? Thanks for any help.
If the pickups go to the wiper terminals, volume control is independent. If the pickups do not go to the wiper terminals, volume control is not independent.
Hey guys, big thanks for all the help. I got it working, after a lot of de-soldering and re-wiring! I also read up on pots and how they work. Interesting stuff, although I still don't quite get all of it. I'm sure I'll be learning more as I go forward!
