Confession Time: Admit How You Are Different From The Bass Player Norm

Discussion in 'Bassists [BG]' started by nocontrols, Jun 2, 2011.

  1. Different from the norm?

I dunno if this different but:-

I don't idolize any bassplaying greats...I don't spend hours trying to perfect basslines by Jamerson or Lee or anybody.

I spend more time studying frameworks and structure of many types of music.

For instance :- if it's a funk bass line......I look at a lot of different funk lines and players ...not just one that I hold above the rest.

If it's a blues bass line....I listen to all kinds of blues bass lines....I don't hold one above another.

I don't think I need to own 15 bass guitars.....but probably 2 or 3 might fit the bill........because there are inescapable subtle differences between types.

I don't go ra-ra over cheap basses.......there are basses out there that are very well engineered and built....and....they command a certain price. End of story.

The cheap bass phenomena is the same as the cheap audio equipment phenomena.

You want a cd player that will sound gi-awesome.....you can get one........but they cost money.

A $45 dollar cd player is not going to sound as good as an $800 cd player.

Right now I play an IbbySR500.........not bad for what it is.....but there are definitely a couple of basses on my "future" radar that are higher up the food chain.....

I tbink Im pretty common in my circles but heres my list.

    I play 100% by ear
I can play extremely fast with my thumb nail up and down
I can play with picks, three fingers, and am trying to learn slap
I am a severe music snob. I pick talent over simplicity
I mostly write music on the bass melodically as I am used to playing alone more often than with people.
I cannot "Jam" very easily. Being by ear, i dont know any note names or scales... only patterns that go together by sight. Making up stuff on the fly embarasses me because usually i will hit notes out of thebscale and i just cant take it. If Im allowed to listen to a song and write a line to it on my own, i can add a lot of complex, rich basslines.

I'm a guitar player more than a bass player--although I enjoy playing both.

  7. I am the Anti-NORM
    let me count the ways
    1. Both of my basses where given to me. I started playing at 42 years old.
    2. I don't believe that there is a genie inside a bass or an amp or cab. I tear them all apart and put them back together to suit my abnormal self.
    3. I don't buy "hype" I buy cheap stuff for my homemade tone. I built my own cabinets (thanks Duke Lejeune!).

    I never ever slap
Relic or Road worn for me I hate glossy guitars
I never use my pinky to fret and sometimes use my thumb
I rarely get GAS, these are tools to me first and....
I dont chase the tone dragon.

Jazz bassist, he doubles on bass guitar and upright bass. I first heard of him in the mid 80s playing with Chick Corea's Elektric and Akoustic Bands

  13. From what I`m seeing here, there are a whole bunch of abnormal bassers.
I can`t read music (or tab), and ABSOLUTELY refuse to slap/pop. Got a lot in common with Boom762 besides the fact that I`m not very good with my thumb technique.

I don't care about being a good bass player. I only care about being solid with my band or anyone I play with.

    1. I usually play more than 4 strings
    2. In my opinion every single Fender bass is ugly
    3. I don't care for any music Jaco has made. I respect him as a great player, but I don't like his music.
    4. I hate tort guards on any instrument.

Weight and neck profile have absolutely no bearing on whether I buy a bass

I notice the differences in individual basses, sure, but there is no such thing as a neck being too fat or a bass being too heavy

i am a musician first and always.

'bass player fanaticism' is funny/entertaining/boring to me. i don't ascribe to (nor participate in) the 'bass-player-as-second-class' inferiority rituals.

i practice to accomplish something....anything. i read, write, and arrange.
