I have some old dynamic microphones my grandfather gave me recently. However, they are high impedance mics with unbalanced 1/4 inch connectors. I was wondering if it is possible to just plug them into a D/I box or should I get those transformer connectors that go from high Z 1/4 inch to low Z xlr? Or, could I just remove the step up transformers that are inside the microphones?

  2. Use a DI.

I did that once recording a harmonica with an old shure mic. The mic has 1/4" plug at the end of the cable, and I plugged it into a DI.

    I think that should work
