Contender for top GC trade-in horror story

I'm moving from four strings to five. I went to GC today to see what they'd give me for my Ibanez Prestige SR5000E, in like new condition.

Salesman couldn't give me a price so went in to see the manager, came back 10 minutes later and offered me...

$500

For a bass I just bought from them, used, 6 months ago for $1600.

Other things were said but not worth writing down.

I knew I'd get low balled but that isn't low ball, I don't even know what to call that.

In a capitalist system, you have the option to sell it to them or not. Their primary obligation is to their shareholders, not you. It's always best to sell an instrument yourself, and here at TB is one of the best places to sell it. Of course, now everyone knows you were offered $500 for it.

Thanks for the post, at least now I'm able to get a laugh out of the situation.

Sold new for $1,600, that means they can sell it again used for $1,000. They always offer half of what they could sell it for.
I wouldn't even dream of going to GC or Sam Ash & getting a good price for used gear.

Bought it used for $1600.

Every GC trade-in is a horror story.

I've had some okay trades with them, I'm thinking the lower priced the gear, the better the offer, at least that's been my experience, ymmv.

Wouldn't you have been better off pawning it & just getting it back the next time you got paid?
i would have been better off if i didn't waste a month having it on consignment at a local shop, i got 450 for my retrofried gibson flying v bass and 275 for the lakland, i think i was just in denial, but i did get the 700 bucks i needed to avoid the huge late fee i had to pay the previous year on the property tax
