While I was gigging with my '73 Jazz this weekend, it occurred to me that I have been gigging this same bass for almost 30 years. That's longer than I've been married--and I have grandkids!

But, while I have been a member of TB, I have read/seen older basses than that--still in use!

It occurs to me that a properly maintained bass might last just about forever.

So post your claim to the oldest gigging bass.

    Two rules:

    1. The bass must be your main bass or at least a MAIN part of the regular rotation, if you use more than one bass.

    2. Must be an electric bass. (This is the electric forum, after all. There's a separate Double Bass forum.)

Pix welcome. To kick it off, here's a pic of the bass in 1978, and one in 2008. I have aged a lot more than the bass has!

Gigged my '55 P-bass for many years since I got it in 1973. For a while it was my only bass. I still gig it sometimes. Sadly, no pics except of the bass. Here is what it looked like when I got it:

To find the oldest bass still in active use.

    It'll be hard to beat a '55...

Contest may be nearly over...with Jim Carr as the winner.

So in the spirit of thread veer--just tell us about your old bass still in use!

Even the oldest Fender can't compete with URBs.

I think we'd better limit this to slabs (electric basses.) Someone else can start a thread in the Double Bass forum.

(My URB is a '55 Mittenwald)

I use to gig my '68 Hofner 8-string regularly, but haven't had a regular gig in a while now, particularly one calling for the 8.

    I'm out.

Very early 60's is the best I could have offered.

The "old ones" are all in "the closet" now anyway.

    Cheers,

    Mr. BEAR

I gig primarily with a 1939 Epiphone. Since they also made guitars and eventually electric basses, I feel I should win; if it's a contest.

    P.S. My main Electric is a 67 EB-0.

Ooops, I thought you meant an Epiphone guitar. Cool old bass!

Looks fully carved and with real purfling.
